The Legend of Zelda film will end a 40-year naming tradition

Nintendo has revealed the official title of its upcoming film adaptation: The Legend of Zelda. The subtitle-less name breaks a long-standing tradition for the video game series and matches the title of the original 1986 game.

The announcement was made during the September 8, 2026 Nintendo Direct. The series is also marking its 40th anniversary this year, making the shared title a clear reference to its first entry.

Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will play Link, while Bo Bragason will play Zelda. They are currently the only confirmed characters. Speaking during the dedicated Legend of Zelda Direct, Nintendo President Shigeru Miyamoto said, “We’ll share more details at a later date.”

Nintendo and Sony Pictures have not yet revealed further cast or plot details. The film is scheduled to open in theaters worldwide on April 30, 2027. Ainsworth and Bragason’s casting was announced in May 2025.
