iPhone Handoff will arrive with iOS 27 later this month, allowing users to switch between two iPhones while keeping one phone number. The feature was briefly mentioned during the WWDC keynote in June, but no details were provided at the time.
A demo clip now shows the setup process running in Xcode 27’s Device Hub. Users can pair two iPhones, designating one as the main device and the other as its “companion.”
The feature’s launch could be useful alongside the expected release of the foldable iPhone Ultra. Owners may not always want to carry a chunky and extremely expensive phone, and Handoff could let them temporarily switch to a cheaper, smaller device. The source gives a cracked iPhone 13 as an example of a phone someone might continue using.
Carrier support will be required. References to T-Mobile US and Telekom.de were found in the code, but support beyond those carriers remains unknown.
