JioHotstar, the streaming platform controlled by Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries, will replace Hotstar in the UK, Canada and Singapore as it begins its first expansion outside India.
The service will launch with more than 160,000 hours of entertainment content, including Indian films, TV originals and reality shows such as Bigg Boss. It will also carry live TV channels under the Star banner, including Star Plus, Colors, Star Vijay, Asianet, Star Jalsha and Star Pravah. JioStar said its content is available in 12 languages, with dubs and translations also offered.
Sports will not be available at launch because of existing content deals. JioStar did not rule out adding sports later. The omission distinguishes the international service from its Indian offering, which includes cricket events such as the Indian Premier League (IPL), Women’s Premier League (WPL) and Indian national cricket matches. JioStar says JioHotstar has more than 500 million monthly active users in India.
Starting September 2, Hotstar will cease to exist in the three markets. Users will lose access through the Hotstar app, but their existing login credentials will work on JioHotstar. The app will be available through the App Store and Google Play Store on mobile devices and connected TVs. The United States is not included in this initial rollout.
