Apple Maps Renames Lake Ontario to Lake America

Apple Maps has changed the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in the United States, following an executive order signed by President Donald Trump during a trade dispute with Canada.

The change follows a similar update by Google. Google changed the name shortly after Lake America appeared in the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), while Apple made the change later.

Apple Maps displays different names depending on the version of the app. The Canadian version still shows Lake Ontario when users pan over the area. International versions show both Lake America and Lake Ontario, according to Bloomberg.

Apple and Google also changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America after a similar executive order signed by Trump last year. MapQuest has not changed the name of either body of water.
