YM Pro is a free, open-source music player for Mac that offers an alternative to Apple Music, especially for people using an external DAC. The app is available on the Mac App Store and has now been approved after an apparently difficult review process.
Its main difference from other players is that it bypasses the system mixer and connects directly to the DAC. YM Pro automatically switches the DAC's sample rate to match the file being played, up to 192kHz. Its “hog mode” also turns off system sounds and other audio during playback.
The app's “bit-perfect” approach avoids upsampling or downsampling files to match a fixed DAC setting. Instead, it adjusts the DAC to the audio file's resolution and avoids software resampling through the operating system. YM Pro is designed for high-resolution FLAC playback, although it also supports MP3 and WAV. It handles PCM formats but not DSD.
YM Pro requires Apple Silicon and does not connect directly to a Music library. Users select a folder for the app to catalog and play, then keep its contents updated manually because automatic scanning and updating are not available. As a first release, it still has interface, audio-output, and playlist issues. Early feedback says it sounds good, while developer Yonesh Murugan is seeking feedback and planning enhancements.
