Rune unveils RELIC system for AI computing at unused solar sites

TechRadar’s Efosa Udinmwen reports that San Francisco company Rune has introduced RELIC, a modular compute unit designed to run directly on unused solar power. It attaches to functioning solar installations without a grid connection or new construction.

Solar facilities can waste as much as 20% of the electricity they generate, exceeding 50 TWh annually nationwide. Rune says RELIC draws that idle electricity directly from the source, avoiding metering charges, utility fees, and grid limitations.

The launch accompanied a $40 million Series A round, bringing Rune’s total capital raised to $53.5 million. Rune says RELIC can be installed in about 60 minutes and provide working GPU capacity within six weeks of a contract, compared with conventional data centers that can take several years to become fully operational.

The company reports an 85% reduction in non-compute infrastructure spending, representing roughly $620 million in savings across a 100 MW deployment. RELIC runs on direct current, requires no extensive site preparation, uses no water, and leaves no visible trace. Rune’s initial working installation is at a 200 MW solar facility in Texas, mounted on existing infrastructure without modifications. The company is testing whether unused solar capacity can support AI computing at the speed demanded by a growing market.
