Microsoft Names Its Developer-Focused Windows Experience Project Zenith

Microsoft has named its developer-optimized Windows experience Project Zenith. The company says it is designed for new developer-focused devices with 64GB or more of unified memory.

Project Zenith devices include a preconfigured Windows setup and tools selected for common development tasks. Microsoft says developers can run 30B+ parameter models locally and unmetered, which can support experimentation while reducing reliance on metered cloud tokens.

AMD announced the first Project Zenith device at IFA: a miniature PC powered by Ryzen AI Halo chips. Microsoft says more Project Zenith devices will arrive “in the coming months,” including models using different silicon.

The devices will come with Visual Studio Code, GitHub Copilot, PowerToys, WinAppCLI, and Windows Dev Skills pre-installed. File Explorer will show file extensions, hidden files, and the full path in the title bar. Microsoft has also disabled recently used files and folders, sync provider tips, Start menu tips, and account notifications, while enabling long-path support and the PowerToys Command Palette by default.
