TSMC Operations Boss Says AI Cannot Fully Overcome Limits of 1.4-Nanometer Chip Design

TSMC co-chief operating officer Y. J. Mii said artificial intelligence cannot fully overcome the limitations involved in designing next-generation chip manufacturing technology, including the 1.4-nanometer node.

According to Wccftech, Mii made the remarks while speaking to students at National Taiwan University. He compared AI to a three-year-old Superman, describing a system with significant capabilities but important limitations.

Mii also said humans should be the only ones making decisions about AI. His comments came as debate over the technology intensifies following remarks from executives and media reports about rogue software.

The TSMC executive also discussed the factors that influence the company's decisions to invest in advanced manufacturing process technology nodes. The report identified overseas operations as part of that discussion, while emphasizing the challenges involved in extending chip-manufacturing capabilities.

Mii's comments present AI as a tool that can support technical work but not as a complete replacement for human judgment in the development of advanced manufacturing technology. His assessment specifically includes next-generation processes such as the 1.4-nanometer node.
