Google makes it easier to switch password managers on Android

Google has introduced a new password manager switching experience on Android that does not require users to download CSV files when moving to a new app.

The feature lets users transfer all their passwords, as well as passkeys, between apps. To begin, users open their new password manager and choose whether to import or copy passwords from the old manager.

Android detects password manager apps on the device and coordinates the transfer between them. Users can review the information being moved and approve it in a few taps.

Because passkeys can also be transferred, users do not need to set them up again when changing password manager apps. Google said the method also avoids the risk of exposing data from a CSV file.

The experience is already available through select partners and in Google's own password manager app. 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane are currently supported, with more apps planned for the future. The feature will be available on all devices running Android 8 or above.
