Cleura and Nextcloud launch European collaboration platform

Swedish cloud provider Cleura is presenting a new collaboration platform with Nextcloud for organizations seeking to reduce their dependence on cloud services outside Europe. The platform combines collaboration tools and AI services, with data remaining within Sweden and the EU.

Cleura says the platform is intended to address privacy, regulatory compliance, digital sovereignty, fragmentation and delivery models. It is available as a SaaS service or as a fully managed service. The companies say the platform is designed for organizations that want modern collaboration features while keeping data management aligned with applicable rules.

Cleura CCO André Hansen points to several examples of dependence on foreign providers. In 2024, Denmark’s Datatilsynet found that personal data about school students in Google Workspace had been provided to Google for purposes without a legal basis. In the same year, the EDPS found that the European Commission’s use of Microsoft 365 breached several data-protection rules. In 2005, the United States sanctioned International Criminal Court chief prosecutor Karim Khan, who lost access to Microsoft services, including email.

Cleura’s AI strategy includes tools for data analysis, automation and decision support. It says all data and prompts remain in Sweden and the EU, and that customer data is never used for model training or transferred to a third country. Hansen argues that cloud selection is ultimately a decision about who controls an organization’s operations.
