iOS 27’s Spatial Reframing Adds a Nonexistent Person to a Photo

Apple’s iOS 27 update includes Spatial Reframing, an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that lets users adjust the angle of a photo after taking it. TechRadar reports that the feature produced an unexpected result in a Reddit user’s photo of a horse.

Reddit user friendofmany said the original image showed only a small piece of a hat behind the horse. After the focal point was moved with Spatial Reframing, the AI expanded the visible hat into a completely nonexistent person. The user described the result as a “random dude” and a “full rando.”

Spatial Reframing works by allowing users to drag a photo with a finger while the angle changes. Apple says the tool can help create a more satisfying composition without retaking the moment. However, changing the apparent camera direction requires the AI to fill in parts of the scene that were not captured.

The same process can affect buildings and busy streets. TechRadar says its tests produced added windows and ledges that were not present in real life. The phantom horseman illustrates the current limits of Apple’s AI photo editing as Spatial Reframing makes its iOS 27 debut.
