Windows administrators report that Microsoft’s September 2026 Patch Tuesday cumulative updates are causing Remote Desktop Services (RDS) failures on Windows Server 2019, 2022, and 2025 systems.
The servers may work normally for a few hours before existing sessions fail to disconnect or log off. New Remote Desktop connection attempts can hang and eventually fail. Some administrators said the problems began after users logged out, while others reported failures within a day that required a hard reset. Restarting the server did not resolve the issue in every case.
The reports involve Server 2019 update KB5122876, Server 2022 update KB5122882, and Server 2025 update KB5122871. One administrator investigating Server 2022 said debugging appeared to show a deadlock between Remote Desktop and the Local Session Manager at RDPSERVERBASE!WDLIB_Close. Microsoft has not confirmed that this is the cause.
Administrators who rolled back the September 2026 updates said Remote Desktop functionality returned. Removing the updates also removes the security fixes included in the Patch Tuesday release. BleepingComputer said Microsoft had not responded to questions about the reports or any available fix or mitigation at the time of publication.
