Google launches Gemini 3.8 Flash with higher token use warning

Google has launched Gemini 3.8 Flash, just a few weeks after Gemini 3.7 Flash. The company says the new model “works harder” on complex tasks by performing more reasoning steps and “calling tools iteratively.”

Gemini 3.8 Flash has the same introductory pricing as its predecessor: $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens. Google warns that the model might use more tokens to maximize performance, especially at higher effort levels, which could make it more expensive to use. Developers can continue using Gemini 3.7 Flash to minimize token usage.

Google says Gemini 3.8 Flash brings significant improvements to software engineering and autonomous AI agents. It outperformed Gemini 3.7 Flash and other frontier models on the DeepSWE v1.1 software engineering benchmark, including Anthropic’s Fable 5. It also outperformed competitors on the Vals Finance Agent V2 and Harvey’s Legal Agent benchmarks.

The model includes safeguards against misuse in Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) domains and cyber offense. Google also released Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber alongside the Fairwind Program, which is limited to governments and trusted partners. Its 650 members include CrowdStrike and the Center for Internet Security. The program provides access to 3.8 Flash Cyber and Google’s CodeMender agent.

Gemini 3.8 Flash is available now to consumers with a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription, developers, and enterprise users.
