Cathay Pacific tests Google AI that cuts contrail warming by 40%

Google is partnering with Cathay Pacific to test AI-powered technology that helps reduce warming from aircraft contrails on flights across the Asia-Pacific region.

Contrails are thin ice-crystal cloud streaks that form when planes enter cold, humid air. Some can persist and spread into cloud-like formations that prevent heat from escaping into space. Contrails are thought to account for around one third of aviation's total climate impact.

Google's system uses AI to recommend small altitude changes that steer aircraft away from areas where warming contrails are likely to form. Early trials involving 80 Cathay Pacific flights produced a roughly 40% reduction in the warming impact of contrails. The system is now being rolled out across the airline's whole network.

The recommendations combine satellite imagery, weather forecasts, and Google's AI prediction technology. Information is intended to reach the cockpit early through in-flight Wi-Fi without interrupting standard cockpit workflows. Google says the changes will not affect passengers or flight safety and are similar to routine route adjustments made for other operational reasons.

Contrails.org, a nonprofit involved in the project, says adjusting the routes of 5% of flights could avoid up to 80% of contrail-related warming.
