A recent bug that stopped some older Amazon Fire TV devices from showing sideloading apps was not a decision to remove the feature, according to Amazon.
The problem affected Downloader, a popular sideloading service developed by AFTV News. Similar apps also disappeared from the “Install unknown apps” list in Fire TV settings. That list allows users to grant apps permission to install software from sources outside the official Fire TV app store.
The issue did not affect every Fire TV device, but it led some owners to suspect that Amazon was restricting sideloading on older models. The concern was heightened because the latest Fire TV Stick HD does not support sideloading in the same way.
Amazon told AFTV News that a bug in a recent Fire TV Settings update caused the list to appear incomplete or empty on some devices. The company said it had identified the cause and that a fix would roll out automatically in an upcoming Fire TV Settings update over the coming week.
AFTV News reported that the fix will likely arrive as a component update. Users can also check manually through Settings > My Fire TV > About > Check for updates.
The change applies to older devices. Newer models powered by Amazon’s Vega OS, which is replacing the Android-based Fire TV OS, will likely not support sideloading.
